The much awaited Mary Meeker Internet trends 2017 report has been released. As has been the case for the last couple of years, the report extensively focuses on India, which has one of the biggest internet population in the world. With 355 million internet users, India ranks second in the list, only behind China. Another interesting highlight of the report is on how finally new apps are gradually becoming popular in India.

According to the report, Truecaller is now the fourth most downloaded app in India. The app has even surpassed Facebook. The top three most downloaded apps in India are WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, and Shareit. The top 10 list includes the likes of Hotstar, Facebook Lite, and UC Browser. Meanwhile, Truecaller has revealed that users are making over a billion calls per month as compared to half a billion calls per month around the same time last year.

Last year, Truecaller had entered into a partnership with Huawei to offer preloaded Truecaller app on the latter’s phones in markets like America, Middle East & North Africa, South East Asia and India. The partnership kicked off with the launch of Honor 8 smartphone last year. RELATED: Truecaller crosses 100 million impressions in India

Truecaller started off as a call directory service and a tool to keep pesky calls away. However, the app has become insanely popular in the country, especially Android users. While it is available for iPhones as well, Truecaller has apparently become a must app on Android phones, where it has far more functionalities.

Over the years, Truecaller has expanded its portfolio with the launch of Truedialer and even native messaging service. However, a major update was recently rolled out that included support for feature phones and the UPI platform, enabling digital payment transfer from the app itself. The new version, called Truecaller 8, also brought in a new feature that will allow users to block pesky SMSes as well. Another interesting development that is in the works is a deeper integration of Google’s Duo video calling service within Truecaller 8. The integration allows Google Duo pull relevant data and provide it to the users.
