Earlier today all the posts that were cross-posted on Facebook by Twitter users temporarily disappeared before appearing back after some time. Initially many presumed that Facebook was responsible for removing all these posts, especially after the Cambridge Analytica. According to one of the initial reports by TechCrunch, it was believed that the reason these posts were removed was that of the API restrictions that the platform imposed on all third-party developers. The social media giant would limit what developers can use the ‘Facebook Login’ API for.

This would also stop social media giants from directly taking any action on the behalf of the user on their profile. This includes posting directly on the timeline of the user on their behalf. The changes started rolling out from 1st August but this was regarded as one of the most significant impacts because of the restrictions applied by Facebook. However, it turns out that Facebook was not responsible for the disappearance of the cross-posted material from its platform. Instead, Twitter was the culprit behind this goof-up as Facebook clarified in a statement to Axios.

The social media giant confirmed that a Twitter administrator requested Facebook to remove the Twitter app from their internal app system. This resulted in all the associated data getting removed from the platform including the cross-posted posts from Twitter to Facebook. The company claimed that it was surprised that Twitter made this move including the length of time it took for the company to request Facebook to restore the data.

However, Facebook has restored the cross-posted content from the profile of its users once Twitter noticed the goof-up and requested Facebook to keep up the content.
