“We’re removing background images from the home and notifications timelines on web for all users. Now, background images are only available where logged-in users will see them publicly (Tweet pages, list pages and collections pages),” the spokesperson told the publication. Even though Twitter hasn’t given any official reason for this change, many speculate that it could be to drive more direct ads to users. In a bid to get more direct control over ads display, the company has taken this move to display white backgrounds for all desktop users. Of course, Twitter users aren’t particularly pleased by this change and have been expressing their displeasure ever since.

Currently, there is no way to get the background back to its artistic genius that it previously was, but Twitter provides some relief by confirming that it still appears in some places like behind individual tweets or topic-based lists and pages.
