Twitter’s effort to fight trolls and bullying on its platform, has brought about the birth of another initiative. The company has now rolled out another feature which will help a user in reporting a threatening tweet to the police. The feature will collate a stock report for the user and email it to them, along with guidelines for the law enforcement department for ease in reporting and proceedings. It works rather simply, after filing a report on Twitter, you ll see an option on the last screen to receive a summary of your report via email. Twitter will generate a report and send it on your aforementioned email ID. The email will contain the threatening tweet, URL, and Twitter handle of the person who you want to complain against. It will also display the timestamp at which the tweet was posted. Your personal Twitter information will also be included in the report. Most importantly, it will provide a link to guidelines page for the police, to explain what additional information Twitter can divulge and how authorities can request it. It is important to note that Twitter will only make the report that you can present to the police for ease in filing a complaint. The actual complaint will not be made by Twitter, and the aggrieved will have to manually go to the police station if he feels that a certain tweet warrants a serious threat.
In January, CEO Dick Costolo admitted that Twitter sucked at dealing with trolls and instances of abuse online. The company then announced new tools in February that made it easier for users to report abuse, as well as improve overall safety.
