Twitter Lite: Low bandwidth, data efficient mobile friendly version launched today

Twitter announced a lite version that will save you data and works offline as well.


At an announcement in Delhi today, Twitter launched its new service for emerging markets called ‘Twitter Lite’. This isn t the first-time services have looked closely at the state of internet connectivity and quality of network infrastructure in markets such as India. In order to have a very lean, agile and swift response, users can simply login to Twitter via their device s mobile browser via The key problem that Twitter is trying to solve by launching this service is to utilize as minimal mobile data as possible. Beyond this, the service would load quicker on sluggish networks. In a country such as India, this becomes a handy service. Although networks such as Reliance Jio are enjoying widespread attention due to the rise of interest around 4G, the overall quality of network infrastructure is still in need of much need improvement.

Not only would users from urban India who travel frequently, but even users in sub-urban and rural India, would find Twitter Lite useful. With the additional data saver mode, you can reduce your data consumption by up to 70 percent according to Twitter. If you re on a limited data cap or have passed your dreaded FUP limit, then you would find this feature handy. Twitter does this by prioritizing the loading of images. Instead of autoplaying videos or loading images by default, Twitter simply shows you a blurred image at first, and then displaying a crisper version once you tap on the tweet to load the image. If you use Google Chrome, Twitter Lite will also send you push notifications as if it is an app. In addition, offline support for Chrome means you d never be away from your Twitter conversations even if you lose connectivity while on the move.

Twitter has also partnered with Vodafone in India to popularize the service through its network of 200 million subscribers. The service, however, will work with all network operators and isn t tied in to Vodafone. Through a specific tie up with Vodafone, users would receive live cricket updates as well as curated Twitter timelines that allows cricket fans to follow the IPL 2017 T20 cricket season currently underway.

Speaking at the event, Avneesh Khosla, Executive Vice President, Products & Services, Vodafone India said, We are happy to partner Twitter to offer this innovative service to our customers. It will enable our customers to access a selection of curated Twitter content in their area of interest first with cricket and more to come across other genre. Throughout this 10th season of IPL, our customers can look forward to enjoying some great content using Twitter Lite on Vodafone SuperNet.
