Today, Twitter celebrates its ninth anniversary. It almost feels hard to believe that it has been so many years since the micro blogging site was found. To mark the occasion, the company has put together a list of its greatest hits.
In these nine years, the site has grown from a micro blogging platform to a place where news break, election results are decided, and celebrities connect with their fans by giving them a glimpse at their private lives.
While Twitter boasts more than 289 million users, there are still doubters about the long-term sustainability of the platform. The number of users is growing at a slower rate, and there are more than 24 million users who have never once tweeted.
Nonetheless, this is Twitter’s day to celebrate, and its greatest hits include the first-ever tweet by co-founder Jack Dorsey in 2006, the first tweet to use a hashtag a year later, and celebrity Ellen Degeneres’s Oscar selfie moment among others.
