Twitter continues with its “filling the holes” policy with the announcement of custom timelines. With this, users will be able to curate timelines with tweets that are either handpicked or by using programming logic using an API. This, Twitter hopes, will create separate timelines during events. Currently Storify provides something similar where it lets users to pick up tweets among other content from the web, embed into their Storify page and embed it into their own blogs or websites. Custom timelines will initially be available to Tweetdeck users and will be rolled out to all Tweetdeck users in the coming weeks. To create a custom timelines, users will have to add a new column with the new “Custom timeline” type. All custom timelines will be public and will have distinct URLs of their own. Users will be able to follow custom timelines created by others by visiting their profile and checking their custom timeline tab from their profile deck. Those with the knack of programming can even use programming logic to automatically create custom timelines. Currently the API is in beta and available to a small group of users selected by Twitter.
