Twitter users boycott Myntra for an ad it did not even make

Social media is unbelievable! Since a few hours, Twitter users have been incessantly talking about an ad that hurt their religious sentiment. The controversial ad has Lord Krishna searching for an ‘extra long saree’ on Myntra. People are snubbing the e-commerce site for the ad, which interestingly, wasn’t even made or endorsed by Myntra.

If you happened to scroll through your Twitter feed this morning you might have noticed #boycottMyntra trending in India, and of course not for a good reason. The Tweeples are outraged for an ad that shows a scene out of the Hindu epic Mahabharata, where during Druapadi’s cheerharan, Lord Krishna is seen shopping for an ‘extra long saree’ on Myntra. The ad seems to have really hurt the sentiments of users on Twitter. Within hours, the trend has been turned so personal and Twitteratis are seeing it as a religious offence.

In order to get back at the e-commerce site Myntra for the “outrageous” post, users on Twitter are threatening to boycott the site with a #boycottMyntra campaign. In addition to not using the site, several tweets have called for a boycott by Myntra app uninstalls. However, what’s extremely interesting is that the ad has nothing even remotely to do with Myntra, except that its name is up on the ad. The ad was actually created by a Delhi-based content creation site ScrollDroll, and they themselves claimed that they were the ones who created the ad and Myntra was nowhere associated with the same. ScrollDroll clarified this through their official Twitter handle as well.

 

 

According to ScrollDroll, the ad was created by them back in February, which probably must have resurfaced because of yesterday being celebrated as Lord Krishna’s birthday. The artwork was immediately pulled down by them after the entire incident took place. But it’s surprising that out of all the people on Twitter who incessantly shared and shamed Myntra for the ad, none noticed the ScrollDroll watermark right on the top left of the picture.

BGR India contacted Myntra to learn how this incident has affected them. While Myntra made it clear that they had nothing to do with the ad, we were also told that the company is going to take legal action against ScrollDroll for causing a harm to their brand image. “This creative was done and posted by a third party (ScrollDroll) without our knowledge or approval. They have already pulled down the illustration and apologized publicly for the same. Myntra does not endorse it. We will be pursuing legal action against them for using our brand,” a spokesperson from the e-commerce site told BGR India.

 

The incident does reveal that how social media users are becoming impatient and that absolutely anything can offend them. A lot of users without trying to find out the truth are taking part in such outrage. This also reminds us of the outrage against Aamir Khan and Snapdeal over the actor’s remarks on the ‘tolerance’ issue. Like Myntra, Snapdeal had also become a punching bag with many users giving poor ratings to the Snapdeal app on app stores, and even uninstalling it from their smartphones.
