Within a month of debuting in seven Indian cities, Uber is continuing on its expansion spree and today announces its entry into four more Indian cities. With the addition of these new cities, Uber now operates in 22 cities across India. Starting its services in Bengaluru, Uber then expanded to Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Chennai, Pune, Kolkata, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Chandigarh, and Kochi. The expansion comes less than a week after Uber announced that it plans on investing $1 billion or Rs 6,400 crore in India over the next nine months. This investment will be used for expanding operations to new cities, develop new products and payment solutions, as well as touch a million trips per day in the next six to nine months.
Uber recently received funding from Tata Opportunities Fund, reported to be around $100 million. Last week, it also partnered Airtel to offer free Wi-Fi facility in cabs, as well as the option to use Airtel Money as an additional method of payment via the app.
