Every year, close to the festive season, with a gush of party invites coming in, we also notice an increase in incidents caused due to irresponsible drinking. Combating this prominent issue, Uber is rolling a couple of new features and services in the country. Calling it the #DontDrinkAndDrive campaign, Uber has collaborated with Bars Against Drunk Driving (BADD), which covers over 250 bars and restaurants across the country. Essentially, with the campaign Uber is pushing people to take cabs back home when they leave a party. Of course, if people consider this, it would immensely shoot up the demands for Uber for at least the next 15 days, but it would dramatically help bring down cases of people getting drunk and driving rash on city streets. “Drunk driving is a globally recognized risk factor. In India annually over 6750 people are killed and 18,800 are injured in road crashes involving drunk driving. Targeting this menace requires a collective effort and we are glad that in this campaign, Uber is not just talking about the effect of drinking and driving but also actively reaching out to people directly and providing solutions”, stated, Saji Cherian, Director, Operations of SaveLIFE Foundation, a non-profit organization doing pioneering work in the area of road safety and emergency care. Firstly, talking about the Uber Breath Analyzer kiosks, these booths will be set up at key party hot spots in the country to encourage riders to use Uber instead of their own cars, when under the influence of alcohol. Each of these kiosks will have breath analyzers to calculate the blood alcohol content (BAC) in a person s body. If the person s BAC is higher than the permissible limit for driving, they can sign up and take their first free ride on Uber by using the promo-code DDAD100.
Uber will also provide the bars and restaurants access to RiderDOST, an app that can be accessed by RiderDOSTs (Uber Brand Advocates) at the kiosks set-up inside the premises. Through this app the anyone can help anyone book a ride, even if they don t have the Uber app downloaded on their device and the app s tracking will let them know if the rider got home safe. As for the promo code, Uber will provide personalized promo codes to bars and restaurants that join this movement, to help them encourage their customers to avoid drunk driving and Uber it instead.
