Motorola introduced the first practical modular smartphone in the Moto Z and Moto Z Play. These smartphones get additional capabilities thanks to what the company calls Moto Mods. After the first batch of launches, the company invited developers to submit ideas for Moto Mods, and selected a few they believed had merit. Among the selected Moto Mods, was the Ultimate Moto Z Mod, which right now is still in prototype and is listed on the crowdfunding website IndieGogo. The Ultimate Moto Z Mod provides wireless charging capabilities and infrared emitters for remote control functionality. However, what really makes the mod special is how it manages to make the form factor as sleek as that of a device that does not sport the Mod. Essentially, the mod offers Moto Z users the added features in a shell, which is barely thicker than the existing style shells . The developer notes, In a recent article it was stated that Moto Mods are in use about 10 percent of the time. This means that 90 percent of the time, it is just a phone, and likely has a style shell attached to it. If the style shell had function on top of form, it would add utility and convenience over and above what the phone is already capable of. And that s what the Ultimate Moto Z Mod is aimed to do. Basically, the product would provide a functionality to the phone even when there are no other “mods” attached.
The Ultimate Moto Z Mod with Wireless Charging can now be pre-booked with a support fee as little as $35 for a received unit, or at $10 for those who just want to support the idea and help it gain enough funding to get past the prototype stage. Although, it is worth pointing out that the $35 model is only for a Mod that supports wireless charging. If you would prefer the dual functionality Mod, that is, both wireless charging and IR, the price is $45 for one shell and $85 for two. Also, do note, as with any crowd-funded product, it is always worth keeping in mind that backing does not guarantee you will receive the product.
Earlier this year, Motorola organized a Moto Collide event to help developers contribute to the Mods ecosystem and fund their own. The company also shared the Moto Mods Development Kit (MDK) allowing developers to come up with ideas. We plan to share the Moto Mods Development Kit (MDK) with the world, allowing people everywhere to contribute to the ecosystem by bringing their own Moto Mods to life, the company added.
With Mods, the Moto smartphones can transform into a camera with optical zoom, a movie projector, a boombox and more. Launched last year, these Mods interact with the 16-pin magnetic port placed at the rear of the Moto Z and Moto Z Play. Up till now, Moto has launched Incipico offGRID Power Pack, JBL Soundboost, InstaShare projector and the Hasselblad True Zoom mods, a Mophie Juice Pack battery and a car dock from Incipio.
