UMI X2 launched in India for Rs 14,000, comes with 5-inch HD display, 2GB RAM and 13-megapixel camera

Chinese smartphone maker UMI has introduced the X2 smartphone in India for Rs 14,000. The device is notable because it boasts of a number of features that we associate with smartphones that cost upwards of Rs 30,000. It features a 5-inch IPS, Gorilla Glass 2 Display with a full-HD 1080p resolution a first for a device south of Rs 20,000 in India. Features wise, it also gives the Micromax Canvas HD shivers as it is priced very similarly, but on paper it has a distinct hardware advantage over it.

The UMI X2 sports a 5-inch full HD IPS display with an impressive pixel density of 441PPI, which is similar to the HTC Butterfly and the Sony Xperia Z. It is powered by the MediaTek MTK6589 quad-core processor clocked at 1.2GHz that we have already seen in the Micromax Canvas HD but this time around it is supplemented by 2GB of RAM instead of 1GB on the Canvas HD.

Moreover, the device runs on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, and features a 13-megapixel rear camera with flash, a 3-megapixel front camera, a 32GB internal storage, and a micro-SD card slot. On connectivity front, the dual-SIM phone comes with 3G, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and GPS connectivity. There is also a 2,500-mAh battery, which will definitely come into play considering it has quad-core processor and a 1080p display.

Looking at the price it will certainly give the Canvas HD a run for its money, however Micromax has now built a decent reputation in the Indian market and its brand resonates with the masses. Additionally, it has an aftersales network and as UMI is a relatively unknown brand one does have questions about the quality of the device and its aftersales. The Canvas HD on the other hand is the best ever Micromax smartphone we have tested, so it will be interesting to see how this plays out.
