Amidst all the reports of new smartphone chipsets, including the Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 and rumored Huawei Kirin 710, comes a new chipset that has taken us by surprise. First discovered and reported by MySmartPrice, a chipset called the Qualcomm sdm680 – effectively the Qualcomm Snapdragon 680 – has been listed on leading benchmarking website Geekbench.

While Geekbench listings typically mention the smartphone name alongside other information, in this case the device is mentioned as the sdm680 as well, suggesting that this might be a testing device by Qualcomm itself. The device is running Android 8.1 with 6GB of RAM, while the processor on-board is a six-core affair with a base frequency of 2.15GHz.

Not much else is known about the device, but we can speculate a bit on possible implementations of the chipset. Like other SoCs in the Snapdragon 600-series, it could be fabricated on the 14nm process, and the arrangement could be a 2+4-core setup or a direct 6-core setup. We’re more biased towards the latter, as this could be a performance-centric chipset based on the naming convention. The Snapdragon 660 uses an eight-core setup with a 4+4-core arrangement, and this could be a more powerful version of the same without the focus on energy efficiency.

Devices that use such a chipset could be performance-centric devices that are priced in the mid range. Qualcomm is also developing the Snapdragon 710 for devices that are positioned just below typical flagship smartphones, and the 680 could be positioned as an affordable but performance-based chipset for smartphones.

As the Qualcomm Snapdragon range gets more diverse, the company is developing specific chipsets that fit into practically every possible price and positioning bracket. While the Snapdragon 800-series typically finds a place on top-end smartphones, the new 700-series hopes to fill the gap between the flagship 800-series and mid-range 600-series.
