Fingerprint technology is improving at a rapid pace after the technology first made its way to smartphones back in 2011 with optical fingerprint scanners. The technology has come a long way paving its way from capacitive fingerprint scanner to more recently ultra-sonic fingerprint scanners and under-display fingerprint scanners with the recently launched Vivo X21 and the concept model that it was based on that was revealed last year. Though, if you think that cramming a fingerprint scanner under a smartphone display is the most technology can innovate then a new report is here to prove you wrong. According to an article that was first published in Nature Communications and then reported by CNET highlighting the future of fingerprint scanners.

According to the article, a group of researchers in South Korea is working on developing flexible and transparent fingerprint sensors that can measure the pressure applied along with the body temperature of the user through their finger. The scientists working as part of the group belong from Samsung Display-UNIST Center at Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology. The article points out that the sensor that the team is working on “can be integrated with all transparent forms of tactile pressure sensors and skin temperature sensors”. This is likely to give smartphone makers and hardware makers room to add extra security features to the fingerprint sensor.

This still would need connecting the transparent sensor to other sensors to work, but the possibilities are interesting, to say the least. The reason we state this is because future smartphones with this sensor will be able to detect human skin temperature to ensure that anyone is not using a fake hand or artificial fingerprint to break through the security defenses of the smartphone.

It will also enable smartphones to make more drastic identifications about if the finger belongs to someone alive or dead with the help of the temperature detection while enabling much thinner, improved full-screen fingerprint scanners that can be embedded in the display with similar accuracy and speed to that of a capacitive fingerprint scanner.
