Fashion clearly was the wearables of the 1980s. For the uninitiated, there was a time when Apple dabbled in Fashion and had not one or two but a whole range of clothing and accessories under its brand. The brand had everything from chunky sweaters (luckily in more colors than Steve Jobs would sport) to baseball caps and sunglasses. The brand even had footwear, one of which has made it’s way to the market — now, in 2017. So yes, for all you Apple lovers, if flaunting your iPhone, iPad, MacBook, iPod (millennials can gloss this one over) wasn’t enough you can now dress up in legit Apple footwear. Heritage Auctions, a well known Auction House from the US, is about to auction off one of the famous Apple-branded sneakers from the 80s on ebay. The auction will be held on June 11 and the starting price for the pair of sneakers is a whopping $15,000 — that’s over Rs 964,000 in case you’re thinking of submitting a bid. The auction house is pegging the actual value of the sneakers around a cool $30,000 (approximately Rs 1,928,715). These sneakers though could be sold at a much higher value, depending on the bid. The reason the sneakers are extremely special is because they were only a prototype and never reached the market. The sneakers were developed and distributed in-house – -only to Apple employees. The shoes are all white and come with the older, rainbow Apple Logo. As they were never sold and only distributed among employees, the pair up for auction is extremely rare and valuable. Though they will be up for bid only on ebay US, people from all over the world can submit their bid. The sneakers are men’s and come in a size 9.5. Previously, there was a similar pair of Apple Mens’ Sneakers with 8.5 size listed which fetched far too little — $79 (over Rs 5,000). The sneakers were first spotted during a garage sale where Heritage Auctions managed to snag them and as there are believed to be just two such sneakers ever produced (both prototypes of a product then abandoned) and as the first pair sold for too less, the second pair is expected to fetch the price the exclusivity demands. Sadly they’re sneakers and come with no high-end tech features – but considering Apple’s recent track record, they’re mercifully dongle free!
Honestly, observe closely and the white Apple sneakers are not unlike the Reebok Club C White Sneakers that all of Hollywood and Bollywood seem to be obsessed with. Looking at the late 1980s and 1990s trends making a comeback, these Apple sneakers have more than a strong chance of being sold for a killing. Considering the sentimental value they hold for Apple fanboys, the final price is expected to be well over the worth. This is not the first such item from an old Apple fashion catalogue to be auctioned and in the past, there have been Apple accessories or things owned by Steve Jobs himself auctioned off for huge amounts.
Yes, so unless you’re one of those startup whizzes or have lakhs to blow away, the only thing you’ll be bidding is a goodbye.
