The state government of Maharashtra and Virgin Hyperloop One have tied up to make Mumbai-Pune travel faster than ever before.

Back in November 2017, Virgin revealed that it was identifying potential routes and analysing the high-level economic impact and technical viability of Hyperloop transportation solutions in India. And now, according to a report by TOI, at the global investor summit, Magnetic Maharashtra, Virgin Chairman Richard Branson confirmed that they will be soon beginning work on this project.

Branson said that his company has signed an intent agreement with the state government of Maharashtra to develop a Hyperloop route between Pune Central, Navi Mumbai International Airport (which was proposed at the same summit), and Mumbai.

Branson reportedly claimed that the near supersonic travel will not only dramatically cut down the travel time, but will also help reduce accidents.

Essentially, Hyperloop transportation involves special tunnels, in which, the train floats above the track using magnetic levitation, allowing it to run at a speed of 1,000 kilometer per hour.

While the Pune-Mumbai link is the latest project, the Andhra Pradesh government announced back in September 2017 its association with California-based Hyperloop Transportation Technologies (HTT) to develop India’s first Hyperloop route between Vijaywada and Amravati. The trials for this route began in October 2017.

Hyperloop as a concept started gaining ground in 2013 when Tesla founder Elon Musk started floating the idea of tube-based transportation. The initial concept was developed as an open-source project by engineers from SpaceX and Tesla, both companies owned by Musk. Several organizations have since then taken the concept and design, and are building features on it.
