Vivo X21, the first commercial smartphone with in-display fingerprint scanner, has been launched in India. The smartphone was made official at an event in New Delhi. The X21 is a premium mid-range device with one unique feature that can’t be found on any other smartphone in the Indian market.
The Vivo X21 with in-display fingerprint scanning was launched in China in March. The smartphone was extended to other markets starting with Singapore early this month and India will be the third market to get the device. This is also the first time that the Chinese smartphone maker is bringing its X-series smartphone to the Indian market. While the smartphone will compete with other premium mid-range smartphones in the market, it will have one unique feature in thein-display fingerprint scanner.
Thein-display fingerprint scanner is a relatively new technology where an optical sensor is placed underneath the display and uses the OLED panel’s back lighting to trigger when a finger is placed on the sensor. The technology for now works only OLED displays and does not work with LCD displays. Right now, the sensor for this technology is only made by Synaptics and Qualcomm and the Vivo X21 seems to be using the sensor from Synaptics.

It is believed that Samsung and Apple are also working on similar technology and it is expected to become mainstream only in 2019. Vivo, however, seems to bring the technology into more devices including it’s upcoming truly bezel-less smartphone codenamed Apex. So, is an under-display fingerprint sensor enough to differentiate the smartphone and compete against the likes of OnePlus 6 and Honor 10? Here is how they compare:
Design and Display
Vivo X21, OnePlus 6 and Honor 10 feature a similar design at the front since they all sport a notched display. At the back, OnePlus 6 and Honor 10 get a glass back while Vivo X21 sports a metal unibody design. Though it looks standard, it also makes the X21 less susceptible to cracks/shatter when dropped from a reasonable height. The Honor 10 comes in Phantom Blue color, which gives it a unique appearance as if its shifting colors from blue to green when exposed to light.
The Vivo X21 and OnePlus 6 both feature a 6.28-inch display with a Full HD+ resolution of 2280 x 1080 pixels. They both look identical with a small chin at the bottom of the display. The Honor 10, on the other hand, features a 5.84-inch display at the front with a resolution of 2280 x 1080 pixels and taller 19:9 aspect ratio. Both Vivo X21 and OnePlus 6 have an edge here with their AMOLED displays which tends to display deeper black and has higher contract compared to LCD display.
Vivo X21, as noted earlier, has an under-display fingerprint sensor, which makes it look really clean and unique. OnePlus 6 has a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor placed below the vertically stacked dual rear camera module. On the Honor 10, the fingerprint sensor is placed at the front, and it is an ultrasonic one.
We are looking at mid-range performance oriented smartphones. OnePlus 6 is arguably the most powerful of the three models with option for up to 8GB RAM, 256GB storage and Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset. The Snapdragon 845 is an octa-core CPU based on second-generation 10nm processor and includes features like secure enclave and neural processing support.
The Honor 10 is powered by company’s own Kirin 970 SoC, which is an octa-core CPU coupled with dedicated neural processing unit. The Kirin 970 is also an octa-core CPU and is fabricated by HiSilicon, Huawei’s semiconductor division and includes ARM’s Mali G72 GPU cluster. The Honor 10 comes in only one storage variant of 6GB RAM and 128GB storage.
Vivo X21, on the other hand, is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 chipset, which was one of the first in the Snapdragon 600 series to get Kryo cores. The octa-core chipset includes four Kryo 260 Performance cores clocked at 2.2GHz and four Kyro 260 Efficiency cores clocked at 1.8GHz. The chipset is, however, fabricated using the older 14nm process, which makes it less power-efficient than other two smartphones. The Vivo X21 is also offered in only one storage variant of 6GB RAM and 128GB internal storage.
All the three smartphones feature dual rear camera setup. The Vivo X21 sports dual rear camera stacked vertically similar to Apple iPhone X. The Vivo X21 sports a combination of 12-megapixel and 5-megapixel image sensors with the primary sensor offering f/1.8 aperture and dual pixel phase detection autofocus. The secondary 5-megapixel sensor with f/2.4 aperture is primarily used to read depth data and works in tandem with the main sensor. With X21, Vivo is offering a standard 12-megapixel selfie shooter with beautification effects at the front.
OnePlus 6, like its predecessor, features a combination of 16-megapixel and 20-megapixel sensors. Both the sensors have wider f/1.7 aperture and the second sensor is used here for depth sensing and support portrait mode. OnePlus is also bringing back optical image stabilization this time which should support in low-light mode. The smartphone comes with a 16-megapixel selfie shooter with gyro-EIS, auto HDR and 1080p video recording.
Honor 10, on the other hand, has a primary 16-megapixel sensor with f/1.8 aperture coupled with 24-megapixel black and white sensor. It also uses AI for real-time recognition of 500+ scenarios in 22 different categories. It also supports bokeh mode in addition to multiple subject recognition. At the front, there is a 24-megapixel front camera that supports company’s 4-in-1 Light Fusion technology to capture better selfies in low-light.
Vivo X21 is priced at Rs 35,990, which is quite competitive compared to its price in other markets. In China, it priced at RMB 3,598 (around Rs 38,100) and it was launched in Singapore at SGD 799 (around Rs 40,300). The smartphone will be available exclusively on Flipkart and pre-bookings are now live through Vivo’s online store. The company is charging Rs 2,000 as the advanced pre-booking amount and those who pre-book the device can avail exclusive offers including a five percent cash back and no-cost EMI options.
OnePlus 6 is available exclusively on Amazon India and it starts at Rs 34,999 for the base model with 6GB RAM and 64GB storage. The variant with 8GB RAM and 128GB storage is priced at Rs 39,999. There is also OnePlus 6 Marvel Avengers Limited Edition variant with 8GB RAM and 256GB storage, which retails for Rs 44,999. As mentioned before, the Honor 10 comes in only one storage. It is priced at Rs 32,999 and is available exclusively from Flipkart.
