According to Vivo, the new technology features 3D depth sensing that can scan up to 300,000 sensor points on one’s face. It further states that the front camera sends out a pulse of light, and calculates the time it takes to bounce back to the sensor, after being reflected from the facial points. Vivo calls the technology TOF (time of flight) 3D sensor. Also Read - Android 12 beta 2 rolling out: New privacy features, tweaked design and more
Besides Face ID, Vivo also plans on combining the technology with AI in order to improve portrait photography on the front camera of its smartphones. The company is also contemplating on implementing an AI beautification mode, where it will take a full-body scan of the person and enhance facial features accordingly. The technology will also help Vivo build a foundation for AR features, with regards to clothing and furniture apps. Lastly, the Vivo sensor could also be used with motion sensing and gesture controls, thanks to its depth recognition of 3 meters.
