Huawei has been making some of the finest smartphones in the past few months. Its flagship Huawei P20 Pro not only is the first smartphone to feature triple lens camera system, but also the first to feature aurora effect where color of the back panel changes according to light reflected from the surface.

The Chinese smartphone maker has also gotten better at the hardware game with its own Kirin 970 CPU and partnership with Leica for improved imaging experience. However, it continues to lag in one and probably the most important area: software. Huawei’s smartphones run custom version of Android called EMUI, which is heavily skinned in comparison to other Android smartphones. These skinned nature of Huawei’s software has frustrated developers in the past and seems to be a headache even now.

VLC, the popular video application has decided to blacklist Huawei-made smartphones due to how those devices affect the app. VLC media player is one of the most widely used application on the market and is available on multiple platforms. It is definitely one of the best applications for streaming local media and has only been getting better on Android over the past few years. The developer believes that Huawei’s devices have not played nicely with the application.

VideoLAN, the makers of VLC media player, announced their plan to blacklist Huawei smartphones on Twitter. This will block all Huawei devices from downloading VLC media player from Google Play store. VideoLAN says it decided to block its application due to “ridiculous” way that Huawei’s software handles background applications. It claims that Huawei is aggressive with killing background activities from apps that are not made by the company itself.

Due to Huawei’s practice, VLC media player cannot work with background play when the phone keeps killing it. VLC media player users with Huawei devices have complained about this issue on VideoLAN’s forums and the issue has also been posted on Google Play Store.

While Huawei device users cannot download the app from Play Store, they do have the option to download APK and sideload it on their device. The app will available for download officially once Huawei fixes its software to better handle background applications. VideoLAN particularly notes this change only affects recent Huawei devices.
