If you had been looking forward to an iPhone with an OLED display, chances are you will have to wait until 2018 for the display to make it to Apple s flagship smartphone. It had been widely expected that the iPhone 8, scheduled to be released in 2017, will come in three variants with one featuring an OLED screen instead of the LCD display for more saturated colors, sharper images, and better contrast. However, the latest reports suggest that it will be difficult to bring the technology onto the anniversary edition iPhone as there will still be a limited supply of such panels in the coming year. According to KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, three iPhone models are expected to be released in 2017. However, based on a report on the Wall Street Journal, supply of the new OLED displays for iPhones will be scarce and the demand could only be met in the year that follows. This comes after earlier speculations about the OLED display being limited to only one of the three variants. According to a Bloomberg report, as there are just a handful of suppliers that manufacture components like OLED displays, they may not have enough production capacity to make screens for the new iPhones next year, with constraints potentially continuing into 2018. With the anniversary edition iPhone 8, Apple is expected to bring in a lot of enhancements and features to its flagship smartphone, which include a re-introduction of the iPhone 4-like glass back. The three variants of the purported smartphone will differ in terms of display sizes. Apple is said to introduce a new size which will sit between the smaller and the phablet-sized version at 5-inches. However, as the 4.7-inch model and 5-inch model will sit closely, it could also mean that the smallest version will take an exit with the iPhone 8, leaving just the new 5-inch model and the phablet-sized 5.5-inch Plus variant. It is further expected to do away with a physical home button and come with a fingerprint scanner that is layered beneath the display.
