Was Apple App Store infected by a malware inspired by CIA?


In what is a first-of-its kind incident, Apple s App Store was hit by a malware, affecting nearly 50 iOS apps. Apple is currently fixing the huge security breach, and while there is no word on the origin of the attack, a theory has surfaced regarding the inspiration behind the malware. The malware, called XcodeGhost, essentially dupes app developers into using a corrupted version of Xcode, the software used to create apps for iOS and Mac. Although this is the first of its kind attack on Apple s App Store, the method of the attack is not new according to The Intercept. According to the publication, US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) demonstrated a similar method to manipulate the Xcode in order to get access to the usually secure iOS devices. This was demonstrated at CIA s top-secret Jamboree conference in 2012, details of which were revealed by NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden.

The origins or the perpetrators behind the attack are yet unknown, and the publication could just be connecting a few dots. But the similarities in the modus operandi could be more than just mere coincidence.

Apple in the meantime is working on fixing the security breach and has asked developers to verify the version of Xcode they are using for their apps. Furthermore, Apple will also be notifying individuals if they have an infected version of the app installed on their devices.
