Watch the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 put through scratch and drop tests, and survive like a boss

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 may not have Corning Gorilla Glass protection, but its screen is tough enough to survive scratch and drop tests. This video proves it.

One of the things we noticed about the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 was the absence of a Corning Gorilla Glass protecting the display. We have been asked questions about the need for a scratch guard, but a video posted by Xiaomi has put to rest all these fears. Xiaomi’s VP Hugo Barra and Jai Mani have put the Redmi Note 3 through scratch and drop tests to show the strength of the smartphone’s screen.

Barra and Mani put the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 through some torturous tests, and yet the smartphone survives without a scratch to show for it. The display’s scratch resistant capabilities are proven when it survives some painful looking scratches from a key, a coin, dart and a pair of scissors. The screen is difficult to shatter and this proven when it survives being dropped from a height, being ridden over by a Ninebot mini and a Honda Jazz, as well as a fall of a dumbbell.

Despite the absence of Corning Gorilla Glass protection, Xiaomi says the Redmi Note 3’s screen is tough enough to survive most scenarios. Explaining the science behind it, Mani says the toughness of a screen is measured by ‘Vicker’s Hardness Test’.

The test includes a prism-shaped diamond being pressed into the screen, which creates an indent. A Vicker’s Hardness Number is calculated by dividing the amount of force applied by the square millimeter of the indent.

Xiaomi says the Redmi Note 3’s screen has a Vicker’s Hardness Number of 649 – 670 kgf/mm2. This number is comparable with Corning’s Gorilla Glass 4, which is present on most high-end flagship smartphones these days. In comparison to the Redmi Note 3, the Vicker’s Hardness Number for Corning’s Gorilla Glass 4 is 596 kgf/mm2. It is clear that the Redmi Note 3’s display is equally (if not more) adept at surviving the everyday rigors of life.

The company says it doesn’t mention the display glass protection as it sources them from multiple suppliers and ensures that the quality falls within the specification range. The Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 scratch and drop test video follows.
