WhatsApp has just appointed the India head that will handle everything pertaining to the multi-media messaging app in the country. The company selected Abhijit Bose for the position and according to the announcement, he will focus on helping businesses to connect with their customers. Whatsapp claimed that Bose will lead the first full country team outside of California and he will be based out of Gurgaon. The announcement outlined that he and his team will focus on WhatsApp Business app by helping businesses adopt the app and associated API. The likely reason to focus on the Business app is that there are over one million users in the country that are using WhatsApp business products . Matt Idema, the CEO for WhatsApp issued a statement on this announcement adding, WhatsApp is deeply committed to India and we are excited to keep building products that help people connect and support India’s fast-growing digital economy. He went on to state, As a successful entrepreneur himself, Abhijit knows what it takes to build meaningful partnerships that can serve businesses across India. After the appointment, Bose also issued a statement adding, WhatsApp is special and can be a major partner for financial inclusion and economic growth in India. He further added, WhatsApp can positively impact the lives of hundreds of millions of Indians, allowing them to actively engage and benefit from the new digital economy. It is worth noting that Bose is currently not part of WhatsApp and he will join the company in early 2019. Previously, he operated as the co-founder and CEO for Ezetap, an electronic payment company that was backed by top-tier Venture Capitalists .
It was surprising to observe that there was no mention of fake news and disinformation in the announcement. Especially since this appointment comes months after the Government of India asked the company to appoint an India head to tackle the spread of fake news on the platform. Though, with this appointment, the government can directly get in touch with the platform on a more immediate level.
