WhatsApp crosses 50 million monthly active users in India, ties up with Airtel for special data plans

Just last fortnight WhatsApp had crossed 48 million monthly active users in the country, which is also its largest country by the number of monthly active users. Depending on the circle, the plan costs between Rs 36 and Rs 49 and offer 200MB of WhatsApp only data usage. Airtel subscribers can text ‘Whatsapp’ to 121 to activate the plan. Also Read - Airtel’s 5G Plus service arrives at Nagpur Airport: Check details

This is not the first carrier tieup WhatsApp has done in India. It already provides similar plans with Tata Docomo, RCom and Uninor.

WhatsApp now has over half-a-billion monthly active users globally and is being acquired by Facebook in a staggering $19 billion deal. The mobile messaging service is also gearing up to launch voice calling service to take on other competing services that provide similar features.
