The inability to send messages has led to a barrage of tweets from frustrated users, which could be seen as a sign of WhatsApp’s popularity, unlike WeChat, which went down last week but there was hardly any outrage from users outside of China. Having said that, even though WhatsApp is arguably one of the most widely used third-party messaging apps, it needs to avoid such outages. Today’s outage, though we are not sure of the extent at the moment, is the second disruption of services in about two months, the most recent one happening on May 31.
We will post an update as soon as we hear more from WhatsApp.
