WhatsApp has been consistently rolling out new features and changes to its platform lately. And the latest in the list is a Group Description feature. The feature is currently only being released for Android and Windows users, and is rolling out in phases. Which means if you are on Android and Windows and haven’t received the feature yet, you shall soon.
This feature allows users to add a description to the group of up to 500 characters. The feature isn’t available for iOS, and we noticed that if an Android using member of the group adds description, the notification is received only by other Android or Windows users, and iOS users cannot see it. Neither the description, nor the notification of the update.
The group description can come in handy in instances when you use chat invite links to ask people to join a group. So if a user sets any description to a group and sends the group invite to a new person, they can read the description before joining the group. The group description will be visible right above the ‘Join Group’ button, which is convenient.
As of now any member of the group can add the description, of course as long as they have the feature, however, according WABetaInfo, in the future the group administrator will be able to restrict this feature preventing non-administrators to modify the group description.
The blog also claims that the feature will be available for iOS by next week.
