WhatsApp just launched its latest feature called “stickers” on its messaging platform. The company is gradually rolling out this new feature on devices running the latest version of its app on multiple platforms including Android, iOS, Web and even Windows Phone (if any). The company launched the version with 12 sticker packs that are already available on its parent company Facebook. As reported previously, we noted that it was likely that WhatsApp will roll out the ability for its users to create custom, third-party sticker packs in the future.

Well, it looks like it did not take long and just a day after the rollout of sticker support, the company has posted instructions on how to create stickers. The WhatsApp development team has posted a dedicated page on its official website to help users with the information about creating new sticker packs. Before we get started, WhatsApp also mentioned that the sticker packs need to be ” legal, authorized and acceptable” according to the details on the page. This likely means that there may not be a sticker pack that is based on copyrighted material including movies, TV shows, and others. Though, the company has not clarified that at the time of writing this.

How to get started

According to the page, users interested in creating sticker packs should be aware of minimum app making the experience as they have to package the sticker pack into a dedicated app. This dedicated can be published both on the Google Play Store for Android and Apple App Store for iOS-based devices. The company also confirmed that it has created dedicated APIs and interfaces for sticker makers with advanced programming skills.

WhatsApp has also set a number of requirements that the stickers “must meet”. There include that each sticker should have a transparent background, they must exactly be of 512×512 pixels size while staying below 100kb each. Each sticker image should have a 16-pixel margin between the actual sticker and the edge of the 512×512 canvas.

Sticker pack makers “must also” provide an icon for their sticker pack so that it can be represented in the sticker tray or sticker pack picker. This icon must be of the size 96×96 pixels with less than 50kb size. The company has posted sample apps on its official GitHub repository. You can visit the repository for comprehensive details, instructions, and tips on making the app package both for Android as well and iOS.
