The new WhatsApp update brings custom notifications, that essentially lets you select a particular kind of notification for each of your friend. You can either choose to mute the chat for a time period, or pick specific ringtones, vibration length, notification LED light and popup notifications. As mentioned above, with this update, Android users also get the new mark as unread feature which seems inspired by Facebook. It essentially lets you change the status of specific messages to unread. This feature was available in an early build, but is now available to all users.
The update also brings along the very handy low data usage feature, which enables users to make WhatsApp calls without eating up a lot of data. It brings new series of skin tones for various emojis like the thumbs up, face emojis and many more. By long pressing the emoji, you can change the color from yellow to dark brown.
The update is being rolled out globally via OTA to Android users. These features have already been available to iOS users for some time now. WhatsApp even rolled out the previous Android-only WhatsApp Web feature to all iOS users last week.
