While the compatibility has been expanded to include Firefox and Opera, the functionality remains the same. So in essence you will need to launch the web client on your browser and scan a QR code with your phone to log in.

It retains all the emoticons, and you can send videos and photos seamlessly. It is important to note that WhatsApp Web only works in sync with your phone, so you have to ensure that your phone has data or Wi-Fi connectivity.
