Group messaging is an important part of WhatsApp, and the company has been steading introducing new features to improve the overall experience. One such feature has been spotted on the iOS beta app, and could soon be introduced for the public.

WhatsApp is working on a new group notifications feature where a user will be notified every time they are mentioned by someone. This upcoming feature was spotted by WABetaInfo. As you can see in the above screenshot, there s a new button just above the jump to the bottom button. In this case the button shows @ symbol and the number four. Essentially this means that your name has been mentioned four times, and tapping on that button will take you directly to those mentions.

The report adds that this button will only appear if the mentioned messages are unread. If you manually scroll through all the unread messages, the button will automatically disappear. At the time of filing this story, the new feature is being tested by WhatsApp. There s no word on when it will be rolled out for the masses.

While this feature is still in beta, it will no doubt be a boon for users who are a part of large messaging groups. Many a times one ends up muting large groups, and skip through messages. With this feature, one could continue to safely skip through messages, and yet not miss out on any that you are mentioned in.

WhatsApp groups have been under the spotlight recently for all the wrong reasons. Though messages are protected by end-to-end encryption, a group of researchers from a German university found a flaw on WhatsApp that can allow anyone to access a private group all without the permission of the group administrator.

On reaching out to WhatsApp, a spokesperson told us, “We ve looked at this issue carefully. Existing members are notified when new people are added to a WhatsApp group. We built WhatsApp so group messages cannot be sent to a hidden user. The privacy and security of our users is incredibly important to WhatsApp. It s why we collect very little information and all messages sent on WhatsApp are end-to-end encrypted.
