Indian smartphone vendor Wicked Leak has announced that all the new units of the Wammy Passion Z+ smartphone shipped from today will run on Android 4.4 Kitkat out-of-the-box. Existing owners of the smartphone will get the update from January 14 though it isn’t clear at the moment whether it would be an OTA update or will users have to visit a service center to get the update. With this announcement, the Wickedleak has become the first Indian mobile brand to sell a smartphone running on Android 4.4 KitKat. The Wammy Passion Z+ has a 5-inch full HD IPS (1920 1080 pixels) display. It is powered by a quad-core MediaTek MT6589 Turbo processor clocked at 1.5GHz, and coupled with PowerVR SGX544MP GPU and 1GB of RAM. Also, it has a 4GB of internal storage that can be expanded to up to 64GB using a microSD card.
It sports a 13-megapixel rear camera with BSI sensor and support for 1080p video recording, and a 2-megapixel front-facing camera. Connectivity-wise it features dual-SIM card slots, 3G support, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS and microUSB. The phone was launched in July this year for Rs 15,990.
Besides Wickedleak, Micromax, Intex, Xolo and Karbonn too are expected to bring Android 4.4 KitKat on their smartphones by early next year. Rumors and conjectures surrounding Micromax have suggested that the company would launch the Canvas 5 with Android 4.4 Kitkat. Besides these, tier one brands like Sony had earlier detailed the KitKat rollout on select Xperia smartphones soon. Leaks have also suggested that LG and Samsung too have been working on KitKat updates for their devices.
