On the occasion of World Emoji Day, Apple has announced that 70 new emoji will be coming to all Apple devices and platforms, including iPhones, iPads, Mac devices and the Apple Watch series. The new emoji are based on approved characters in Unicode 11.0, and will be visible across Apple devices that get the update.
New expressions for smileys include a party face, pleading face, cold face and a face with hearts. Other human and expression-based emoji include a symbol for infinity, male and female superhero emoji, and one for the evil eye charm, which is a popular sight across middle-eastern, northern African and south and central Asian cultures.
Apart from these, some new animal emoji are also set to be added, including specific ones for a parrot, a kangaroo, a lobster and a peacock. Some of the new food objects previewed include lettuce, mango, pie and cupcake. All of the new emoji will roll out with the public release of iOS 12, which is scheduled for later this year.
The popularity of emoji is growing continuously, as more people gain access to smartphones and the ability to send these visual icons over instant messaging services. Apart from Apple, other companies such as Google, Facebook, Microsoft and Twitter also design and maintain their own sets of emoji, in order to offers users a better way to communicate their emotions effectively with a single image-like icon. Reports also suggest that people relate to emoji better than portraying the same emotion through text.

Twitter recently announced the most popular emoji used in India on the micro-blogging platform. The laughing face with tears is the most popular emoji on Twitter, primarily because of its widespread use as a substitute for typing out ‘LOL’ or laugh-out-loud. The smiling face with hearts and the person folding hands emoji come second and third respectively.
