World Emoji Day: Apple celebrates emojis by previewing iOS 11 emoticons

From the head exploding smiley face to the T-Rex emoji, here are the emojis that will come to Apple OS’ later this year.

Over the years, human conversation has changed. The modes of communications have evolved too. Thanks to mobile phones and text messaging, we considered the use of characters a luxury in our messages. Smartphones took what we did through boring text messages, and added character to it. Emojis, gifs and memes are central to our conversations these days. And now, the world has found a way to celebrate emojis through the World Emoji Day on July 17. In case you’re wondering why July 17, well, remember the calendar emoji on the iPhone? That’s how the date was chosen for World Emoji Day. Also Read - Common marketing gimmicks that brands should avoid to exploit consumers

Apple, that is expected to make some big announcement and launch some of the most anticipated smartphones of the year in a couple of months, has also joined in the celebration. Apple teased some of the new emojis that will come with its new OS’ later this year. Apple hasn’t said when the new emoji will be released, but it seems likely that they’ll be packaged into iOS 11 and macOS High Sierra updates scheduled for this fall.

The new emoji appear to be Apple’s take on the most recent Unicode 10 standard, which, among other things, added 56 new emoji to the lexicon. “The new emoji make it easier for users to express themselves with greater diversity, additional animals and creatures, new smiley faces and more,” Apple writes in its press release.

The App Store will highlight apps that help you have fun with emojis. iTunes Movies features Emoji in place of select movie titles.

Among the new pictograms the company has showed off emojis like a woman with headscarf, a bearded person as opposed to the moustached person we have right now, a lady breastfeeding, a boy doing yoga, among others. Apple has also added to the food items with emojis like sandwich and coconut.

Also making debut is a T-Rex emoji, which I have personally been waiting for years now. A Zebra, which was surprisingly not there all this while. It has also added mythical characters like a zombie and an elf, which would really add a lot of fun to conversations.

There are also the new Star-Struck and Exploding Head smiley faces. Jeremy Burge, the head of emoji resource Emojipedia and creator of World Emoji Day, said he expects the smileys, which also include a vomiting face and a wacky face, to be the most popular.

However, if any of these sound familiar to you, that’s because Unicode 10 was officially released by the Unicode Consortium earlier this year on June 20th. But Unicode just decides what the new emoji and text characters are, and then eventually it is up to manufacturers to create and release designs for the emoji on their own. Android O beta, on the other hand, already has the new emoji available to use.
