The site QQ claims that the updated iPhone SE will use Apple A10 processor, 2GB RAM, and will be available in 32GB and 128GB storage options. It claims that the smartphone will retain the Touch ID, and won’t switch to Face ID, which makes sense if Apple plans to keep the price under $500 for its smaller iPhone model. While the specifications do sound similar to other iPhone SE leaks in the past, the Chinese site does have a piece of information that is almost difficult to believe. The site claims that the next iPhone SE will feature a 4.2-inch display. It doesn’t make sense for various reasons. There is no real value in jumping from a 4-inch display to 4.2-inch display, and Apple will have to redo its design process and the manufacturing line to accommodate that change in display dimension.
KGI analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who has a solid track record of predicting Apple products, had dismissed the likelihood of iPhone SE getting any change in form factor or support for new features like 3D sensing and wireless charging. For Apple, the iPhone SE is expected to be the product aimed at those wanting smaller phone, and those looking for an iPhone in budget price tag.
Apple launched iPhone SE in March 2016 as an effort to convince all those holding onto their iPhone 5 and iPhone 5S to upgrade to a newer model. However, the company found success in an unpredicted region India. The iPhone SE has become a huge hit in the country, and its especially popular in the mid-range segment. It is so popular that Apple is now assembling the device locally to keep the cost low.
The rumors of iPhone SE getting a successor has been making the rounds of the internet for the past few months. It was earlier expected to arrive sometime this quarter, and Kuo claims to have heard nothing about the device. In all likelihood, Apple will give iPhone SE a spec bump to keep up with the demands of upcoming iOS 12. However, a complete redesign or features like Face ID seems is definitely not expected on the smaller iPhone.
Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference is expected to be held from June 4 to June 8 at San Jose Convention Center in California. Apple will definitely have updates for iOS, watchOS, macOS and tvOS but hardware has not been a focus for the event.
