Apple has officially announced the dates for its annual Worldwide Developers Conference. WWDC 2018 will take place between June 4 through June 8 at McEnery Convention Center in San Jose, California. This is the second year in a row that the event is being held at San Jose.
At WWDC 2018, Apple is expected to announce iOS 12, macOS 10.14, watchOS 5 and tvOS 12. The Worldwide Developers Conference has served as a platform to see new platform innovations from Apple, and for developers to learn about how to create new experiences across those platforms. Apart from platforms for iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Apple TV, Mac and HomePod, WWDC has also seen a broad range of developer APIs including SiriKit, HomeKit, HealthKit, GymKit, MusicKit, ResearchKit and Core ML.
Apple says it will rely on a random lottery system to address demand for tickets like in the past. Registrations for a chance to buy a ticket is open today until next Thurday, and tickets are priced at $1,599 (). Developers will be notified of their application status by March 23 at 5:00PM PDT (5:30AM IST on March 24). Apple is offering up to 350 WWDC Student Scholarships this year, which lets students and members of all STEM organizations an opportunity to earn a free ticket to the developer conference.
At WWDC last year, Apple announced ARKit, a new platform for developing augmented reality applications and since then, iOS has emerged as the largest platform for augmented reality. At WWDC this year, Apple is expected to announce new features and improvements for a more seamless AR experience.
This year’s WWDC will be significant since it will show what Apple has in-store for future iPhone models. The iPhone models launching later this year are expected to adopt the iPhone X design, and Apple might show UI changes that will enable a more intuitive experience on the iPhone with edge-to-edge display.
While hardware has not really been a major attraction at WWDC in the past, Apple has started showcasing new devices at the conference. At WWDC 2018, Apple is widely expected to announce a new entry-level MacBook with updated display and newer processor. Rumors also hint at an updated iPad model with Face ID and edge-to-edge display design. There are also rumors that Apple will announce the successor to iPhone SE at the event, which will be manufactured by Wistron in India.
On the software front, Apple is expected to downplay the recent vulnerabilities and inconsistency spotted on its operating systems. Apple is expected to show fewer new features this year and focus entirely on offering reliable and more secure operating system. For Apple, its services business has been growing faster than that of iPad and Mac division, and at WWDC, the company is expected to further highlight the success of that division by talking about App Store and services like Apple Music.
