Xiaomi just took to Twitter to clarify that it is not stopping its Unlock Bootloader services. This comes after a number of rumors were floating around on the internet indicating that the company was going to stop the service. The official Twitter account of Xiaomi’s @miuirom refuted the rumors asking users to not “believe in fake news”. The company has also added a link to the MIUI forum post that includes instructions on unlocking the bootloader of Xiaomi devices. The forum post provides comprehensive steps to users on how to unlock the bootloader of their device and then flash MIUI 10 on the device through recovery or fastboot.
The bootloader is a program that loads the operating system, such as Android in the case of a smartphone or even iOS for Apple mobile devices. The program kicks in as soon as the user turns the device on. Almost all smartphone makers ship their devices with a locked bootloader. Locked bootloader means that users can’t change the operating system that the program is loading when the device is turned on.

Unlocking the bootloader allows users to change the recovery program, an internal program that is used to manage the internal contents on the storage of the device. This includes erasing the internal storage or even installing a new operating system.
Users who want to install a custom ROM need to unlock the bootloader and then install a custom recovery. Xiaomi bootloader unlocking process usually includes a wait time between when the user requests to unlock the device and the time when the user can actually unload the device.
