Xiaomi has dethroned Samsung as the top smartphone brand in India after matching the South Korean giant in terms of shipments last quarter. According to data from two tech research firms, the Chinese smartphone vendor sold more smartphones than its Korean rival in the final quarter of 2017. According to Counterpoint Research, the overall smartphone shipments grew 37 percent during the fourth quarter ending December 2017. It says this is the record fourth quarter shipment in terms of volumes and the shipments were largely buoyed by the third quarter pre-Diwali shipments. Chinese smartphone brands continue to dominate the industry with 54 percent combined market share in current year 2017, a jump from 34 percent in CY 2016. Also Read - Good news for iPhone loves! Xiaomi beating Samsung with record shipments remains the highlight. Samsung has been the dominant smartphone brand in the country for nearly six years and now Xiaomi has managed to beat it. The research firm says Xiaomi had a market share of 25 percent at the end of Q4 2017, a significant jump from 9 percent share it held a year ago. Samsung saw a marginal decline in market share from 24 percent at the Q4 2016 to 23 percent at the end of Q4 2017. Lenovo, Vivo and Oppo each had a market share of 6 percent at the end of December 2017.
The Counterpoint research also shows that Lenovo, Vivo and Oppo saw their market share decline from the same period last year. Vivo’s market share declined from 10 percent to 6 percent while that of Lenovo and Oppo dropped from 9 percent and 8 percent respectively.
However, Samsung still remains the leader for the current year with a market share of 25 percent. Xiaomi follows with 19 percent share while Vivo is third with a market share of 10 percent. Oppo and Lenovo had a market share of 8 percent and 7 percent, respectively, in 2017.
Counterpoint Research says that over ten new smartphone brands entered India during the current year 2017. It highlights that new players such as HMD Global, Comio, Infinix and Tecno did well in their first year of operations in India. “The competitive landscape has changed significantly in the last year, with the rise of brands such as Xiaomi, OPPO, VIVO in the smartphone segment and players such as Reliance Jio, Nokia HMD and iTel in the feature phone segment all able to disrupt the market with high-quality and attractively-priced offerings,” Tarun Pathak, Associate Director at Counterpoint Research said in a statement.
Xiaomi had three models in the top selling smartphone list while Samsung had four of its Galaxy J series smartphones. Vivo and Oppo had two and one models each in the list. Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 was the best selling smartphone followed by Redmi 4 and Samsung Galaxy J2. Oppo A37 and Xiaomi Redmi 4A rounded up the top five list.
The numbers released by Counterpoint mimic a similar sentiment from Canalys, which also said that Xiaomi has lost its crown as top smartphone brand in India to China’s Xiaomi. According to Canalys, Xiaomi shipped 8.2 million smartphones in the fourth quarter of 2017 while Samsung managed to ship only 7.3 million smartphones. It says Xiaomi and Samsung have 27 percent and 25 percent market share, respectively and they together control more than 50 percent of India’s smartphone market.
