Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi has sold more than six million units of its flagship Mi 8 smartphone. Lei Jun, Xiaomi CEO and co-founder announced that the company has reached an important milestone of 6 million unit sales for the Mi 8 series, which was introduced during the 8th anniversary celebration in May.
In late May, Xiaomi launched three new smartphones in the Mi 8 series, including the Mi 8, Mi 8 SE, Mi 8 Lite and the Mi 8 Pro. However, only the premium Mi 8 has been available for the large part of last four months while the other models became available only at a later stage. From Xiaomi’s standpoint, it is still a commendable achievement to sell six million units. With Mi 8, Xiaomi is refocusing in the premium end of the smartphone market after spending years focusing on the entry-level and mid-range segment.
The fact that the new Mi 8 has been available only in Xiaomi’s home market makes the sales of 6 million rather monumental for the company. With Mi 8 Pro and Mi 8 Lite going on sale only in late September, there is a possibility for Xiaomi to move few more million units in the Mi 8 series before it introduces the successor.
Xiaomi is rumored to launch the Mi Mix 3 and Mi Note 4 Pro on October 15. The Mi Mix 3 is expected to be a much more premium device compared to Mi 8 and is likely to offer same features also found on Mi 8. If priced similar to Mi 8, the Mi Mix 3 will most likely affect the sales of Mi 8 and other smartphones in the series.

Ahead of the launch of Mi Mix 3, Xiaomi has announced a price cut on the Mi 8, which could boost the sales of the smartphone. Lei Jun announced that the Mi 8 standard variant will be available with a discount of RMB 200 (around Rs 2,100) on the retail price of RMB 2,699. The Mi 8 can now be purchased for RMB 2,499 (around Rs 26,800) in China.
