In August last year, the Indian government had sent a notice to 21 companies including Xiaomi, Vivo, Apple and others over hacking fears. The government expressed fear of smartphone companies siphoning and compromising data of Indian users. Companies were asked to move local data to Indian servers, and Xiaomi has now migrated the data to India s cloud infrastructure. Also Read - MWC 2021 postponed, will happen around June next year

At Xiaomi, data privacy and security are of utmost importance to us. We are taking one more step towards user data security and privacy by bringing our cloud services to India for all local data needs. It s something our teams have been working tirelessly on and I am glad we have been able to turn this around for our India users. With the data stored locally and encrypted end to end, users will be able to enjoy greater access speeds, Manu Jain, Vice President, Xiaomi and Managing Director, Xiaomi India. The data migration covers data of all Indian users across Xiaomi s e-commerce platform, Mi Cloud storage, Mi Community, Mi TV and MIUI content, which includes marketplace, feed, Mi Video, Mi Messaging, push notifications and advertising. The data is being migrated to Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure infrastructure, both of which are regarded as highly secure.

Xiaomi is committed to India and data protection and using cloud servers in India is another step in that direction for us. We will continue to work on this aspect and ensure a heightened user experience for all our users in India, Manu Kumar Jain added.

Data of all new users registered after July 1, 2018 is already being stored on local servers, whereas existing user data on mi.com/in will be migrated to India servers in India by mid-September 2018. Xiaomi further mentioned that the existing data of all users will be migrated by the end of 2018.
