Xiaomi Mi A2 was launched earlier in the month. It’s the second smartphone from Xiaomi to be part of the Android One program, which in a way puts the smartphone upfront to receive new updates. Not just that, at its launch event Xiaomi also confirmed the Mi A2 to be one of its first devices to receive the Android 9 Pie update. While the company hasn’t revealed any specific timeline for it, an invitation put out by Xiaomi for a beta testing program, hints that it could be soon.
Starting today, Xiaomi has opened up registrations for a beta program for the Mi A2 on mi.com. Xiaomi hasn’t mentioned details of the program, but it claims to roll out a special OTA update to the testers, after revealing the list of selected users on September 2. These selected users will also be getting access to a special OTA group called ‘Mi A2 Beta Testers’. The registration is open till August 31.
While we can’t be absolutely sure, there is good reason to believe that the beta testing program will be focused around the Android 9 Pie update. Only two weeks ago, Xiaomi had also sent out invitations for beta testers for its Android Pie-based MIUI Global ROM on the Mi MIX 2S. However, we’re not sure why Xiaomi is keeping it under the wraps.

Along with benefits, Xiaomi has also listed out certain criteria for being selected as a beta tester. Users who apply should be an active member of the Mi Community in India and should have a rank or title of ‘Advanced Bunny’. Good knowledge of Android is also required. Among other things, the company also demands the user to have a Telegram ID, as all discussions regarding the OTA update will take place on that platform. Xiaomi claims the beta test to only be available for the Mi A2, and asks users of other Mi devices to refrain from applying.
