Xiaomi has joined an elite league of smartphone companies, including Apple, Samsung and Huawei, that have their own in-house chipsets on their phones. Called Surge S1, Xiaomi’s new chipset has been developed in partnership with Pinecone, and is now second Chinese brand to have own processors after Huawei. With its in-house chipset, Surge S1 will be taking on the likes of MediaTek and Qualcomm, which dominate the smartphone chipset segment. Surge S1 features and specifications
Surge S1 is an octa-core SoC with four ARM Cortex A53 cores clocked at 2.2GHz and the other four ARM Cortex A53 cores clocked at 1.4GHz. The Mali-T860 quad-core GPU is said to have a 40 percent improved power efficiency (compared to the previous-gen Mali-T760) when running graphic intensive apps. It further comes with 32-bit high performance DSP for better voice processing, dual microphones for noise reduction, and VoLTE support.
Contrary to previous reports, the Surge S1 has been made using TSMC’s 28nm HPc process technology. According to Xiaomi, it took the company only 28 months for the processor from planning to large scale production and it is made by Xiaomi and Pinecone. A report on FoneArena notes the company as saying, “The design objectives are to balance performance and power efficiency and to produced in a large scale.”
The Surge S1 is claimed to excel when compared with the 14nm Snapdragon 625 and both MediaTek Helio P10 as well as P20 on Geekbench 4.0 CPU multi-core benchmark and GFXBench Manhattan off-screen benchmark. The chipset has further achieved Antutu score of 64,817.
Highlight of the Xiaomi Surge S1 processor is the 14-bit dual ISP enhances image processing capabilities that is said to improve camera light sensitivity by 150 percent. It further supports VoLTE quality call and video, upgradable baseband, and offers chip-level security.
Xiaomi Mi 5C features and specifications
The Xiaomi Mi 5C is the first ever Xiaomi smartphone to come powered with the new processor. The smartphone boasts a metal unibody design and boasts a 5.15-inch JDI display with ultra-thin bezels. Under the hood, the Surge S1 processor is paired with 3GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. For photography, it features a 12-megapixel rear camera along with an 8-megapixel front shooter. The Mi 5C is fuelled with a 2,860mAh battery with fast charging support.
On the software front, the Mi 5C comes with Android 7.1.1 Nougat with MIUI 8 layered above. Connectivity options on the smartphone include 4G VoLTE support, and USB-Type C support.
The smartphone is priced at 1,499 Yuan (Rs 14,600 approximately) and available in three color variants of Rose Gold, Gold, and Black. At the given price, the Xiaomi Mi 5C takes on the likes of Moto G4 Plus and Lenovo Z2 Plus in the sub-Rs 15K category.
