Xiaomi is hosting an event in China tomorrow where it is widely expected to launch upgraded version of its flagship smartphone Mi 5. Called Mi 5s, the new smartphone is likely to bring new features along with hardware upgrades to the tow. Xiaomi has been teasing the Mi 5s on Weibo, highlighting is key features. The smartphone has been subjected to a number of leaks over the past few weeks and was also spotted on benchmarking websites, revealing some of its key specifications and features. Dual cameras: It s not a completely new concept, and we have already seen smartphones with dual camera lenses including HTC s One M8, Huawei s P9, Xiaomi s Redmi Pro and the Apple iPhone 7 Plus too. From what we can see in the teaser, the camera lenses sit vertically and are of the same size and shape. The exact working of the dual camera module is unknown at the moment. Xiaomi can either use one module to capture photos and other as a depth sensor to add DSLR-like blur effects to the photos later, similar to what dual cameras on the Redmi Pro does or it could use Qualcomm s recently announced Clear Sight technology for better low light photography, while improving sharpness and dynamic range. It uses one color sensor and one monochrome sensor to achieve the desired results. We will know more details when Xiaomi makes the announcement tomorrow. Ultrasonic fingerprint scanner: In the latest teaser, Xiaomi has teased an ultrasonic fingerprint scanner for the Mi 5s. Making use of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Sense ID feature, Xiaomi can have an ultrasonic fingerprint scanner underneath the display, rather than embedding it inside a physical, clickable home button. Unlike usual fingerprint scanners, the ultrasonic one can scan the fingerprint even if your hands are oily or sweaty. Force Touch: Xiaomi has also teased Force Touch feature of the Mi 5s smartphone, and its working is expected to be similar to 3D Touch feature as on the iPhone 6s and iPhone 7. It will allow the display to distinguish between a soft tap, regular tap or tap and hold. A hard press (or tap and hold), will open a box showing additional options in case of camera, one could long press to quickly access selfie camera, gallery, or video recording mode. From what we know so far, the Xiaomi Mi 5s is likely to flaunt a 5.15-inch full HD (1080p) display with Force Touch. With Qualcomm s 2.4GHz Snapdragon 821 quad-core chipset under the hood, 6GB of RAM and Adreno 530GPU are also expected. The top-end variant is expected to come with 256GB of internal storage and we expect other variants with lower internal storage to be launched as well.
In the camera department, the Mi 5s is could sport a 16-megapixel dual camera at the back of aperture f/1.9 with PDAF and 4-axis optical image stabilization (OIS). Armed with a 3,490mAh battery, connectivity options such as USB Type-C port, Bluetooth, GPS, NFC and Wi-Fi 802.11 are expected. Interestingly, rumors also point at a Mi 5s Plus variant. While one of the leaked photos show off the retail packaging of the box, no other details are available at the moment. In terms of pricing the Mi 5s could set you back by RMB 1,999 (approximately Rs 20,500), whereas the Mi 5s Plus could be priced at RMB 2,999 (approximately Rs 30,500). Details about the release date are however scarce at the moment. We will know more when Xiaomi makes the official announcement tomorrow.
