Xiaomi Mi 6 leak hints at Snapdragon 821 SoC under the hood

Xiaomi is likely to join LG and HTC in using last year’s Snapdragon 821 SoC for its flagship Mi 6 smartphone.

With a number of flagship smartphones for this year already out, eyes are on the likes of Xiaomi to launch its much-rumored Mi 6. Though flagship smartphones are expected to feature the best in the market, a new report suggests that might not be the case with the Mi 6. For one, it will have a slightly dated Snapdragon 821 SoC under the hood. Also Read - Qualcomm launches 8cx Gen 3 chipsets built on Apple M1 Pro-like 5nm architecture

According to androidpure, Xiaomi will not be using Qualcomm s latest Snapdragon 835 chipset on the Mi 6, and instead will opt for last year s Snapdragon 821 SoC. The report however further says that the Xiaomi is likely to follow it up with another version of the Mi 6 that will be powered by a Snapdragon 835 SoC. Though unsurprisingly, there s no official word from Xiaomi, the reason behind the choice of SoC is believed to be low yields plaguing the Snapdragon 835 chipsets. Reports in the past have also mentioned that the yields for 10nm chips are lower than expected, which is resulting in smartphone manufacturers either pushing the launch date or opting for last year s chipset. This isn t the first time we are hearing about Xiaomi facing problems with sourcing Snapdragon 835 chipsets for the Mi 6. An earlier report also suggested that the launch of the Mi 6 could be pushed to as late as May. That, or Xiaomi will join the likes of LG and HTC that launched their flagship smartphones like the G6 and U Ultra with the Snapdragon 821 chipset under the hood. Sony is the only company that launched its flagship smartphone with a Snapdragon 835 chipset, while Samsung s upcoming Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ too are expected to be powered by Qualcomm s latest chipset.

Xiaomi Mi 6 specifications, features

From what we know so far, the Xiaomi Mi 6 is said to be launching in three variants. The base variant will feature 4GB of RAM and 32GB internal storage, the mid-variant will feature 4GB of RAM and 64GB storage. The high-end variant, on the other hand, is expected to feature a ceramic body, and a combination of 6GB of RAM and 128GB internal storage.

Apart from that the smartphone will be armed with a 3,000mAh battery and could come with a USB Type-C port. On the software front, the Mi 6 will most likely run on Android 7.0 Nougat with MIUI OS layered on top.
