Xiaomi has finally taken the wraps off its new mid-range smartphone at an event in China. Called Mi 6X, the smartphone is a success to the Mi 5X that was launched last year, and it brings a number of improvements to the table. The Mi 5X in China ran on Android OS with MIUI skin on top, but the same smartphone was launched in India as Mi A1 and ran on stock Android One OS. The Xaomi Mi 6X features a sleek design with a thickness of 7.3mm, and weighs 166grams. The back has a smooth curved finish to make it easier to grip. On the top, you have an IR blaster that lets you control home electronic devices such as TV, set-top-box, DVD player and air conditioning unit among others. At the bottom, you have the USB Type-C port flanked by speaker grill on both the sides. And yes, Xiaomi has made a courageous move to ditch the legacy 3.5mm audio jack. Along the back, you have the vertically placed dual camera modules, with LED flash module in between. At the center, you have the circular fingerprint sensor for biometric authentication. Xiaomi Mi 6X price and availability
The smartphone will be offered in three storage variants – the base variant with 4GB of RAM and 64GB storage will be priced at RMB 1,599, (approximately Rs 16,900), whereas the 6GB RAM with 64GB storage variant will be priced at RMB 1,799 (approximately Rs 19,000). There is also a third variant with 6GB of RAM and 128GB onboard storage, which will set you back by RMB 1,999 (approximately Rs 21,200). The smartphone will go on sale starting April 27 in China, but there is no word on when it will be launched in China.
Xiaomi Mi 6X specifications and features
The Mi 6X flaunts a 5.99-inch full HD+ display with 18:9 aspect ratio. However, you still have thick bezels on the top and bottom of the display. Under the hood, the smartphone is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 octa-core SoC. Xiaomi says the chipset offers 20 percent better performance compared to the Snapdragon 636 SoC, and 79 percent better performance compared to the Snapdragon 625 SoC.
In the photography department, you get dual cameras at the back, the setup includes a 20-megapixel primary sensor with aperture f/1.75 and pixel size of 2um, and a 12-megapixel secondary Sony IMX486 sensor of aperture f/1.75 with pixel size 1.25um. Xiaomi has also added AI chops in the software for scene detection which can identify from 206 different scenes which includes food mode, text, greenery, sky, beach, snow, cats and dogs to name a few. The second camera sensor comes with a telephoto lens which enables 2X lossless optical zoom and DSLR-like bokeh effects to your photos.
Up front, you get a 20-megapixel camera with Sony IMX376 sensor with soft light LED flash. Just like the rear cameras, the front camera also supports AI scene detection mode, which is optimized to detect 12 self-portrait scenes to help you capture good-looking selfies.
To keep things ticking, the smartphone comes with a 3,010mAh battery with support for Quick Charge 3.0. Xiaomi is also bundling an 18W fast charger that can take the smartphone from empty state to 50 percent in 30 minutes. There is also AI smart power saving mode to help you get full day worth battery backup.
Besides a fingerprint sensor at the back, the Mi 6X also supports AI face unlock feature. In the software department, the smartphone runs Android 8.1 Oreo out-of-the-box, with MIUI 9.5 skin on top.
