Xiaomi Mi 6X launch feat

Xiaomi today launched its mid-range smartphone, the Mi 6X at an event in China. The Xiaomi Mi 6X is the successor to last year’s Mi 5X, and it brings major improvements to its predecessor. The Mi 6X is one of the most interesting products in Xiaomi’s lineup since it has the potential to launch as Mi A2 with Android One branding in markets including India. Xiaomi has strengthened its position in the Chinese smartphone market mainly due to strong demand for its budget and mid-range smartphones. With Mi 6X, Xiaomi is trying to further strengthen its position in the mid-range segment of the world’s biggest smartphone market. There is a ton of difference between the Mi 6X and last year’s Mi 5X, but the larger question is whether Xiaomi is using the same basic design guidelines of Redmi Note 5 Pro for this smartphone as well. Here is a look at what has changed between the Mi 6X and Mi 5X. Also Read - Redmi Watch launched at price of around Rs 3,300

Xiaomi Mi 6X vs Mi 5X: Design and Display

The Mi 6X is a modern looking smartphone, one that adheres to the standard design guidelines of thinner bezels and taller display. It also comes with metal unibody chassis like its predecessor, but the dual camera is now vertically stacked as opposed to horizontally stacked dual camera on Mi 5X. The fingerprint sensor is at the sensor on the back, and the Mi logo is at the lower half of the device. One of the key differences being that Mi 6X now comes in Cherry Pink, Flame Red, Sand Gold, Glacier Blue and Black colors.

At the front, there is a 5.99-inch display, which is much larger than the 5.5-inch display found on the Mi 5X. Since the display now has thinner bezels surrounding it, it is possible that the Mi 6X would be only marginally taller than the Mi 5X. The display on the Mi 6X also supports more pixels with a full HD+ (2160×1080 pixels), and 18:9 aspect ratio. The Mi 5X, in contrast, had a full HD (1920×1080 pixels) resolution display with 16:9 aspect ratio. However, the larger picture is that if Mi 6X and Redmi Note 5 are placed next to each other in the gold color then it would be difficult to tell them apart.

Xiaomi Mi 6X vs Mi 5X: Specifications

Xiaomi is known for offering latest features and specifications at the fraction of cost comapred to its primary rivals. The Xiaomi Mi 6X is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 SoC, the flagship chipset in the 600 series of Snapdragon mobile platform. The Snapdragon 660 is an octa-core SoC clocked at 2.2GHz coupled with Adreno 512 GPU. It is also offered in three different storage options base model gets 4GB RAM and 64GB storage, and a second model offers 6GB RAM and option for either 64GB or 128GB storage. In comparison, the Mi 5X used a power-efficient, but older Snapdragon 625 SoC, and was available in only one storage model 4GB RAM and 64GB storage.

There is another major difference, the Mi 6X runs Android 8.1 Oreo layered with MIUI 9.5 out of the box. The ROM also supports Project Treble, which could mean that it will receive Android P update sooner than other Mi devices. The Mi 5X came with Android Nougat, while the rebranded Mi A1 has received the Android Oreo update. It is backed by a 3,010mAh battery, which is smaller than the 3,080mAh battery found on Mi 5X. The difference in capacity should not be a big deal since the smartphone runs latest version of Android and includes more optimized version of Doze.

Xiaomi Mi 6X vs Mi 5X: Camera

At the event, Xiaomi spoke in length about the camera features of the Mi 6X. It comes with an updated dual camera system that features a primary 12-megapixel camera with Sony IMX486 sensor and f/1.75 aperture. The sensor has a larger 1.25 micron pixel size which should be much more sensitive to light. The secondary sensor uses a higher resolution 20-megapixel sensor with Sony IMX376. The same sensor is also used at the front for taking selfies.

Xiaomi says the secondary camera does 4-to-1 pixel binning to provide better low light images, the technology also found on phones like Oppo R15 and OnePlus 5T. AI enhancements are included with the camera software, and Xiaomi claims it can recognize up to 200 scenes including 12 different portrait modes. Since the technology underpins artificial intelligence, it will only get better with time. The Mi 5X, in comparison, had a simpler camera configuration of dual 12-megapixel sensors with support for 2x optical zoom and a 5-megapixel selfie camera.

Xiaomi Mi 6X vs Mi 5X: Pricing

Xiaomi Mi 6X starts at RMB 1,599 (around Rs 16,000) for the base variant with 4GB of RAM and 64GB storage. The higher end model with 6GB of RAM and 128GB storage is priced at RMB 1,999 (around Rs 20,000). As always, Xiaomi has priced the Mi 6X competitively and the smartphone will only get better when it gets Android One flavor.
