Xiaomi Mi 7, the upcoming flagship smartphone from the Chinese company, is expected to ditch the fingerprint sensor in favor of facial recognition technology. The use of Face ID on Apple iPhone X has inspired the Chinese smartphone makers to think of dropping fingerprint sensor and move ahead with facial recognition.

A new report from MyDrivers claims that Xiaomi will be the first to follow that path with the launch of Mi 7. The sources familiar with Xiaomi’s plans suggest that Mi 7 will include new 3D sensing solutions that will allow the device to support facial recognition feature. The source also adds that the new facial recognition system will come at the cost of fingerprint sensor.

The report adds that Chinese smartphone makers Vivo and Huawei have confirmed to adopt in-display fingerprint sensors for their future devices, but Xiaomi has not confirmed to adopt the technology. The move is indicative of company’s plan to go with facial recognition feature.

Facial recognition is expected to go mainstream next year with Samsung improving its iris scanning system, LG bringing face recognition to G7 and Huawei launching its own Face ID competitor. However, most smartphone makers are likely to offer both face recognition and fingerprint scanning for biometric authentication.

In terms of specifications, the Xiaomi Mi 7 will feature Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset and might adopt the bezel-less design currently seen on Mi Mix 2. It is said to feature a 5.65-inch display with 18:9 aspect ratio.

The report does not reveal whether Xiaomi is developing its own facial recognition system or working with partner companies to incorporate the feature. However, as seen before, the facial recognition systems are not foolproof and can easily be fooled with the help of photograph. If Xiaomi goes all in on face scanning feature, it will have to put priority on security over convenience.

On the contrary, the fingerprint scanning method is secure, fast and more convenient than face unlock mechanism. Xiaomi has not revealed the plan for its next flagship device so this report should be taken with a pinch of salt. The Mi 7 is likely to debut at Mobile World Congress (MWC 2018) in February.
