Xiaomi has added two new ‘Mi 8’ series smartphones to the existing lineup in China today. The company has now launched Mi 8 Youth Edition and the Mi 8 Screen Fingerprint Edition at an event in its home country. The company on Twitter noted that these will be launched as the Mi 8 Lite and Mi 8 Pro in global market. The Mi 8 Youth Edition / Mi8 Lite is a toned-down version of the flagship Mi 8. The smartphone comes with a mid-range Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 SoC. The Mi 8 Screen Fingerprint Edition/ Mi 8 Pro comes with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC and a pressure-sensitive in-display fingerprint sensor. Xiaomi says that the fingerprint only activates the unlocking process once you place your finger on the screen, which is faster and more power-efficient than the regular rear-mounted fingerprint sensor on the Xiaomi Mi 8. Xiaomi Mi 8 Youth Edition/ Mi 8 Lite: Price and Availability
The Xiaomi Mi 8 Youth Edition starting variant with 4GB RAM and 64GB storage has been priced at 1,399 Yuan (approximately Rs 14,500). The 6GB + 64GB model will be priced at 1,699 Yuan (approximately Rs 17,500), whereas 6GB + 128GB variant is priced at 1,999 Yuan (approximately Rs 20,500). It will come in three gradient color options – Aurora Blue, Sunset Gold and Midnight Black.
Xiaomi Mi 8 Screen Fingerprint Edition/ Mi 8 Pro: Price and Availability
The Mi 8 Pro which will be called the Xiaomi Mi 8 Screen Fingerprint Edition in China is priced at starting 3,199 Yuan (approximately Rs. 33,000) for the 6GB RAM + 128GB storage. It also comes in an 8GB RAM and 128GB storage model, which is priced at 3,599 Yuan (approximately Rs. 37,500).
Both new Mi 8 smartphones will be available for pre-orders starting today. The Youth Edition will go on sale on September 25. The Screen Fingerprint Edition will be made available from September 21.
Xiaomi Mi 8 Youth Edition/ Mi 8 Lite: Specifications and Features
The Xiaomi Mi 8 Youth Edition sports a 6.26-inch (2280 1080 pixels) full-HD+ 2.5D curved glass display with a notch and 19:9 aspect ratio. Internally, the handset packs an octa-core Snapdragon 660 chipset with
4GB and 6GB RAM options along with 64GB and 128GB storage models.
In terms of camera, the dual-SIM Mi 8 Youth Edition also gets dual rear camera setup with a 12-megapixel primary sensor and a 5-megapixel secondary sensor. The front selfie camera is of 24-megapixel Sony IMX576 sensor with 1.8um pixel size and AI capabilities. The phone comes with Face Unlock and there is a physical fingerprint sensor at the back.
The smartphone runs Android 8.1 Oreo based with MIUI 9 out-of-the-box. It packs a 3,350mAh battery under the hood, with support for Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0.
Xiaomi Mi 8 Screen Fingerprint Edition/ Mi 8 Pro: Specifications and Features
The Xiaomi Mi 8 Screen Fingerprint Edition sports an in-display fingerprint sensor like on the Mi 8 Explorer Edition, but Xiaomi says this one is a pressure-sensitive in-display fingerprint sensor and 29 percent faster than the one on the Mi 8.
It features a 6.21-inch (2248 1080 pixels) full HD+ AMOLED 18:9 display without notch. The processor high-end Snapdragon 845 chipset with 6GB / 8GB RAM with 128GB storage. In terms of camera, the dual-SIM Mi 8 Screen Fingerprint Edition also gets a dual rear camera setup with a 12-megapixel primary sensor and a 12-megapixel secondary sensor with OIS, optical zoom, 1.0 m pixel size, dual-LED flash and more.
The front camera is a 20-megapixel shooter with real-time AI portraits. The phone also boasts of IR Face unlock like the iPhone X along with new in-display pressure sensitive fingerprint sensor. The phone supports NFC, USB Type-C charging port for 3000mAh battery with Quick Charge 4+ fast charging. It also runs Android 8.1 Oreo based with MIUI 9 out-of-the-box.
