Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi has reportedly discontinued the Mi A1, its first Android One-based smartphone in India. The smartphone was first launched in September last year as a re-branded version of company’s Mi 5X smartphone sold in China. The end of sales of Mi A1 hints at the launch of its successor, which could be officially announced on April 25. Also Read - MWC 2021 postponed, will happen around June next year

The Mi A1 is a mid-range smartphone, and had been available in the country for just seven months. According to 91mobiles, the smartphone has been discontinued in order to pave way for its replacement. The publication cites Xiaomi partners in New Delhi as the source, who claim that the supplies of the Mi A1 has been halted by the company. They also confirm that the last billing for the device was done months ago, and the information has been confirmed by partners outside Delhi as well. On Xiaomi India’s website, the smartphone does not seem to be in stock, and those interested can register for being notified when the smartphone is back in stock. This strongly indicates that Xiaomi is preparing to bring in the Mi A2 as its second Android One smartphone to the Indian market.

Xiaomi has sent out media invites for an event in China on April 25 where it is anticipated to launch the Mi 6X, which will retail as Mi A2 in markets like India. In terms of specifications, the Mi 6X is expected to sport a 5.99-inch display with a resolution of 2160×1080 pixels and support for taller 18:9 aspect ratio. It is expected to be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 SoC clocked at 2GHz.

Unlike Mi A1, the Mi 6X (or the Mi A2) is expected to launch in three different storage options. There is rumor of a base variant with 4GB of RAM and 32GB storage, and a higher model with 6GB of RAM and option for either 64GB or 128GB internal storage. With Mi 6X, Xiaomi will also bring improvements to the camera department, which will fall in-line with Redmi Note 5 Pro.

The Mi 6X will boast dual camera system similar to Mi A1, and will include a primary 12-megapixel Sony IMX486 sensor with f/1.8 aperture paired with a secondary 20-megapixel Sony IMX376 sensor with f/1.8 aperture. The smartphone will support 2x optical zoom and support 4K video recording. The selfies will be handled by a 20-megapixel sensor with f/2.2 aperture and dedicated LED flash.

The Mi 6X is expected to launch with MIUI 9.5 based on Android Nougat out-of-the-box, but there is a possibility that Xiaomi might reveal its custom ROM based on Oreo at the event. The Mi A2, when it gets official in India, should run the latest Android 8.1 Oreo as part of Google’s Android One program. There is no clarity on pricing yet, but past trends hint at a starting price of RMB 1,499 (Rs 15,000) for the smartphone.
