Xiaomi yesterday launched the Mi A2 smartphone in India, which as the name suggests, is the follow-up to the Mi A1. Just like last year’s smartphone, the new Mi A2 is also a part of Google’s Android One program. That said, there are quite a few upgrades to keep up with the growing competition.

Pricing and availability

The Mi A1 comes only in one variant, which features 3GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. It is currently available in India for a price of Rs 13,999 through mi.com and Flipkart. The smartphone was launched in four colors, Red, Rose Gold, Gold and Black.

Prices for the Xiaomi Mi A2 start from Rs 16,999 for the 64GB+4GB RAM variant. The company plans to launch a top-end variant with 128GB storage and 6GB RAM, but there is no word on its pricing yet. Pre-orders for the Mi A2 kicked off today, and it is set to go on sale next week on August 16.

Cameras

Both smartphones feature a dual-rear camera setup. However, the Mi A1 features dual 12-megapixel sensors, while the Mi A2 includes a combination of 20-megapixel primary sensor, and a 12-megapixel secondary sensor. Additionally, the camera on the Mi A2 also comes equipped with AI features, such as Portrait mode and automatic scene selection.

The Xiaomi Mi A2 takes even a bigger leap with selfies. It comes with a 20-megapixel camera up front, which is also equipped with AI scene detections and Portrait mode. The Xiaomi Mi A1 on the other hand only features a 5-megapixel selfie camera.

Display and hardware

The Xiaomi Mi A1 features a 5.5-inch Full HD (1080 x 1920 pixels) screen, which comes with a standard aspect ratio of 16:9. It is backed by a Snapdragon 625 octa-core SoC that is coupled with the Adreno 506 GPU. There is only one variant of the smartphone that features 3GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. It is backed by a 3,080mAh battery.

The Xiaomi Mi A2 joins the current trend of smartphones by featuring a 6-inch Full HD+ (1080 x 2160 pixels) display with a taller aspect ratio of 18:9. It has also been upgraded with a Snapdragon 660 octa-core SoC that comes with the Adreno 512 GPU. While the base variant of the smartphone comes with 3GB RAM and 32GB storage, the smartphone is also available with 4GB RAM + 64GB storage and 6GB RAM + 128GB storage options. It packs in a smaller 3,000mAh battery, but supports Quick Charge 3.0 technology.

Operating system and connectivity options

Both the smartphones are a part of the Android One program. While the Mi A1 was launched with Android 7.1 Nougat out-of-box, the smartphone was upgraded to Android 8.1 Oreo recently. The Xiaomi Mi A2 also runs Android 8.1 Oreo operating system. However, Xiaomi has touted that it will updating the smartphone to Android P soon.
