Xiaomi Mi Max 2 vs Xiaomi Mi Max: What’s different?

Xiaomi Mi Max 2 boasts better specifications, a bigger battery, and a refined design.

Xiaomi Mi Max 2

Big-display smartphones might be impractical for some, but they also prove to be a boon for those looking at a device that stands between a tablet and a smartphone. Last year, Xiaomi introduced the Mi Max smartphone with an atrociously mammoth 6.44-inch display. It did manage to turn heads last year and today, the company has launched its successor — Xiaomi Mi Max 2 in India.

Priced at Rs 16,999, the smartphone will go on sale starting July 20 and July 21 on Starting July 27, the smartphone will be available across other e-commerce sites too. Here’s a look at all that has changed in the second-generation smartphone, and whether it makes for a wiser addition to Xiaomi’s portfolio.

Design and Display

Going by the design, there is a subtle change between the Xiaomi Mi Max 2 and the older Mi Max. The Mi Max 2 now boasts a U-type antenna design that helps keep the rear panel neat by giving a more seamless appearance. The full metal unibody metal structure of the Mi Max 2 has been given rounded edges, contrary to the sharper finish of the Mi Max. As Xiaomi claims, the Mi Max 2 has been improved for one-handed use. The fingerprint sensor stays at its older position on the rear panel while the camera module continues to sit neatly on one corner along with flash. ALSO READ: Xiaomi Mi Max 2 with 5,300mAh battery, 6.44-inch display launched: Price, specifications, features

When it comes to the display, which is the USP of the Mi Max phones, there is no difference between the Xiaomi Mi Max 2 and its predecessor. Xiaomi has kept the display size on the Mi Max 2 intact. It features a 6.44-inch full HD display. The bezels in the Mi Max 2 have been narrowed down while the display resolution stays intact. Having a mammoth display does add to the expectations of having an even enhanced viewing experience, however, Xiaomi has not aimed at offering anything extra. ALSO READ: Xiaomi Mi Max 2 first impressions: The return of the supersized smartphone

The Mi Max 2 gets an upgrade over the Mi Max in terms of its hardware. It is now powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 SoC paired with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. In comparison, the Mi Max is equipped with Snapdragon 650 SoC paired with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage. There is a pricier variant, called Mi Max Prime, which is equipped with Snapdragon 652 SoC with 4GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. So essentially what you get is a boost in RAM and storage, along with a better processor in the Mi Max 2.

Another noticeable improvement made in the Mi Max 2 is the battery capacity. It packs a 5,300mAh battery with Quick Charge 3.0 and parallel charging which is claimed to take the power from zero to 68 percent in one hour. Xiaomi claims you can have two-day of battery usage with the given capacity. In comparison, the predecessor packed a slightly lesser 4,850mAh battery but it nonetheless offered backup for two days and nearly 11 hours of screen on time.

Additionally, the Mi Max 2 also runs the newer Android 7.1.1 Nougat OS wrapped under MIUI 8. While the Mi Max runs on Android 6.0 Marshmallow-based MIUI 8 out of the box, Xiaomi has started rolling out Android Nougat update for the same. The  Added frills in the Mi Max 2 are the stereo speakers and the IR Blaster. ALSO READ: Xiaomi Mi Max Review: Gulliver in the land of Lilliputs

Camera is another segment where the Mi Max 2 differs from the predecessor. The 12-megapixel rear camera uses a Sony IMX 386 sensor and comes with support for PDAF and HDR. The sensor used is identical to the one used in the company’s newest flagship Mi 6 smartphone.

In comparison, the Mi Max bundles more megapixel count in the rear camera. It is equipped with a 16-megapixel rear camera with PDAF and HDR support. However, during the review, we discovered that the output of the camera is just average. Xiaomi shared a few images captured from the Mi Max 2 and they do appear above average in terms of color reproduction and sharpness.

Xiaomi has only launched the 4GB RAM + 64GB storage variant of Mi Max 2 in India. As mentioned earlier, it is priced at Rs 16,999. The Xiaomi Mi Max, on the other hand, carries a price tag of Rs 14,999 for the 3GB model, and Rs 19,999 for the 4GB Prime model.
